ANTONIO JOSÉ ALVES, FATHER OF MAJOR POET OF BRAZIL: CASTRO ALVES

Father of poet Antonio de Castro Alves.
A native of Salvador, where he was born in 1818, and his father Major José Antonio da Silva Castro, Periquitão (hero of the Independence of Brazil).
Pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1841, the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia.
It was the only one in her class, becoming professor of the Faculty (3).
Replacement lens was the Surgical Section, in 1855. External Lens Clinic in 1866. He taught successively the chairs of Descriptive Anatomy, Mineral Chemistry, Physics, General Anatomy and Pathology.
He worked as a surgeon at Charity Hospital, Santa Casa de Misericordia da Bahia.
Sá de Oliveira says that in the hospital, Professor José Alves "practiced interventions but high technical responsibility and the results were explained only by the strict cleanliness it was private. Hence the attention that aroused their surgical procedures "(2).
Manuel Vitorino, said: "Jose Antonio Alves, overcoming the terrible conditions of the Charity Hospital, in any case, practically, successfully, the high surgery, while in primitive facility available to the College, microscopic scans. The lessons that the great surgeon to rehearse on the microscope and its application, only many years later will be a compulsory subject in college "(1).
In 1858, trying to restore the health of his wife, rebuilt the manor farm of Boa Vista, in Sprout, where he later ran the Hospital Moreira. Ali, Dr. Jose Antonio Alves installed its Home Health
He was father of Antonio de Castro Alves, the greatest poet of Brazil and was the author of Historical Memory, Faculty of Medicine, concerning the year 1857.
He died in 1866, and was regarded by his fellow congregation, "one of the greatest surgeons in Brazil."
