Born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1855.
Pasted degree in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, in 1879.
They were classmates: Clodoaldo de Andrade and Jose Pereira Teixeira, College teachers (2).
At the end of sixth year, was named interim Director of the Asylum St John of God, through the Director effective the following year, remaining so until 1882. That year he became Assistant Medical Cynical interim. In 1883, he was Acting Professor in the same discipline. In 1889, after a competition, he was appointed Professor of Medical Pathology. Join Sá Menezes, work cited, that his decree of appointment "was drawn up by the last Emperor of the Lens to the Medical School of Bahia."
During the campaign Straws, assembled and directed the Hospital Jequitaia, a fact that drew praise from government and society in general.
Passed the Professor of Clinical Medicine in 1902, retiring in 1914.
In 1906, he took a course in Tropical Parasitology at the London School of Tropical Medicine.
Upon returning from Europe, gave emphasis to research on tropical diseases, riding a laboratory in the 1st Chair of Clinical Medicine, which allowed his assistant, Manoel Pirajá da Silva, to study schistosomiasis American, discovering, in 1908, Schistosoma mansoni, performing thus one of the most glorious discoveries of medicine nationwide.
Patron's Chair Item 6 of the Academy of Medicine of Bahia.
He died in 1939.
