Born in Salvador, the first day of February 1878 (1), and his parents Antonio Vargas Telles de Menezes and Maria da Silva Menezes.

Plinio Garcez de Senna and Consuelo Pondé Senna, the birthplace was the village of San Francisco (2.3).

Completed the course in humanities, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, graduating in pharmacy in 1902 and in Medicine in 1907.

Were his classmates of Medicine: Aristides Novis, Durvaltercio Bolívar de Aguiar, José Olympio da Silva and Pedro Augusto de Melo. José Olympio da Silva was Professor and Director of the School. Pedro Augusto de Mello was the introducer of civil identification in the State of Bahia, and in his honor, the state government created the Instituto Pedro Melo. Aristides Novis and teachers were Durvaltercio FAMED Aguiar (1).

In 1908, he was to the Chair of Pathological Anatomy and Physiology. By 1911, won the Teaching-free, by tender, the chair of Descriptive Anatomy. In 1913, he was to the Chair of Hygiene. Finally won by tender, the chair of Medical and Surgical, in 1931, became proprietor of Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery, Faculty of Medicine.

At the dental clinic, she taught for several years, the discipline of Dental Pathology.

In the course of Pharmacy, he taught Applied Botany.

He also served as teachers in secondary teaching in various institutions of Salvador, including the Normal School of Bahia, where known as "Well of Wisdom" (3).

Among the works he published, highlight "Flora da Bahia", botanical dictionary of immense value, published in 1949 by Companhia Editora Nacional. This work, in its first edition, was named "Dictionary of Plants of Bahia." The latest edition, significantly expanded, shows the description of numerous plants in Brazil, with their scientific names, common, characteristics and uses. It is a reference for all botanists of the country.

Is the author of another classic book, "Fhysiologia teeth and mouth" as well as a descriptive anatomy of human teeth and a medical-surgical anatomy of the maxillary antrum.

Carlos da Silva Lacaz says: "He left us Ignacio de Menezes, in addition to scientific papers, several literary works such as" In Bahia, in Good Earth, "a novel of manners, printed in 1934 on behalf of the State of Bahia, with a foreword Xavier Marques, "Victorious Youth," also novel of manners, "Chronicles academic", memories of Bahian life of his time; "Bahia of two centuries - 1890-1920," chronicles of life in Bahia, with a preface by Prof.. Pinto de Carvalho. This last book he was in the stage of publication upon the death of the Author "(1).

The distinguished professor and man of letters, one of the highest expressions of culture in Bahia, died on May 10, 1961.
