Born in Salvador, on October 31, 1886, and his parents Fernando Antunes da Luz and Luz Maria Devoto, both traditional Bahian families.

In 1903, he joined the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia. Internal Named Chair of Clinical Surgery, whose chair, Professor. Antonio Mendes Pacheco, master of the most notable was for the young Fernando Luz, real life example.
Completed the medical course in 1908, having as classmates Aristides Pereira Maltez, Dionysos Lima da Silva Pereira da Cunha Eduardo Vidal, Enjolras Vampré, Joaquim Martagão Gesteira and Luiz Antonio de Aguiar.
Maltez Aristides Pereira, Eduardo Vidal da Cunha, Joaquim Martagão Gesteira and Luiz Antonio de Aguiar, became the school's faculty.
