Born in Candeal Farm, Feira de Santana, 30 December 1878. His parents were the farmer Antonio Borja de Freitas Bastos de Freitas and Elvira Borja.
Precocious talent, intelligence, vibrant, impressed his parents from the first years of life. Predicting a bright future, and sent him to the county seat, where he began the study of the first letters. Then sent him to Santo Amaro City and soon after, to Salvador.
In July 1897, had volunteered to serve in the war of Straws.
The following year he enrolled in the courses of Medicine and Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia.
On December 19, 1903, completed medical school.
They were classmates: Albino Arthur da Silva Leitão, Alvin Martin Horcades, Clementino Fraga Rocha Júnior César Eduardo Rodrigues de Moraes, João Sabino Pinho de Lima Filho. Alvin Martins Horcades participated with John Sabino de Lima, as students of medicine, the War of Straws and was the catalyst for a prolonged serious student. Albino Leitão, Clementino Fraga Eduardo Moraes and became the school's faculty (4).
Graduate, headed for Rio de Janeiro where he joined by tender in the Army Health Corps, the rank of 2nd lieutenant doctor, showing pride and responsibility.
In 1907 he returned to Bahia, when he was appointed assistant chair of the 2nd Surgical Clinic. In 1912 he became Associate Professor in the same subject, when he defended the thesis "Slough of the small intestine in strangulated inguinal hernia and surgery."
In 1913 he conducted as interim, 2nd Chair of Clinical Surgery. In 1914, he applied to extraordinary Professor of Clinical Surgery, presenting the paper "Contribution to the study of the treatment of acute peritonitis.
In the year 1915, after a competition, won the Chair of Surgical Pathology. Two years later he was transferred to the chair of clinical surgery and remained there until the end of life.
Always devoted to the progress of the profession, went to Europe and attended the Surgery Services most famous Old World.
Loureiro de Souza says: "A man of vast medical culture, sometimes exercised, temporarily, the chairs of Urology and Pediatric Surgery Clinic. Of the greatest surgeons of his time, was remarkable doctor and teacher, revered by disciples and admired by colleagues in the congregation. Adorned with great kindness, efficient and humane, learned to avail himself of his skillful scalpel to exercise its beneficent action between rich and poor. Loved and admired by his disciples who recognized him, beside the masterly proficiency, the civic honesty, exerted great influence on youth, who took him for a model and guide. And such was his action carat with youth that Nelson Carneiro, upon the death of the great master, in an article called upon the youth to erect a bust of Antonio Borja at the Faculty of Medicine, because he was "an example of pride of rare civic courage "(2).
He died in 1933.
