CREATION OF THE FIRST FACULTY OF MEDICINE IN BRAZIL
JANUARY 1808 - SALVADOR, BAHIA
 


 Born in Portugal in 1772.
Did the medical apprenticeship at the College St. Joseph's in Lisbon.
He came to Salvador, where he served as chief surgeon at the Military Hospital in the former convent of the Jesuits, located in the Shrine of Jesus.
Built by the School of Surgery Prince Regent, was appointed to be one of his first two teachers. Contributed to the fact that the choice of Dr. José Soares de Castro to be a surgeon of great fame and deeper understanding.
He was appointed to govern the chair of Anatomy. The act, signed by Counselor Jose Correa Picanco, is worded as follows: "Having the Prince Regent, Lord, given his agreement to the representation made to him on the need, that there was a School of Anatomy and Surgery in this city for education intended audience of the exercise of this art, giving me the right to elect and Teachers who are worthy of creating and effectively promote this important establishment: I nominate the V. MCE. To give theoretical and practical lessons of Anatomic and Surgical Operations at the Military Hospital of the City, in accordance with the instructions I refer to him, hoping his zeal, patriotism, and distinctive merit of the concept that the performance of your people do . Bahia, 23 February 1808 (2).
At the time Dr. José Soares de Castro, was 36 years old and fought with great difficulty, to the point of writing itself, in 1812, a textbook, under the title "Elements of Osteology," which he dedicated to Dr . Jose Correa Picanco.
In 1813, he published another work, called "From Noxologia.
Then, he wrote three textbooks on Angiology, and nevrologia esplanelogia, which met in a treatise on Anatomy.
In 1815, he was assigned to teach anatomy and Raw General Medical Surgical.
It was Knight of the Order of Christ and given other titles and honors
He died in 1849 in Bahia, at 77 years of age.
Records are unanimous in considering Dr. José Soares de Castro a competent and dedicated teacher.
