Born in Salvador, in the year 1827 and pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1850, the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia.
It became one of the first opponents of the Medical Chamber when, in 1857, after a contest, replaced Prof. Antonio Alves de Lima. On that occasion defended a thesis entitled "Climates".
Two years later, in 1859, also by competition, was appointed assistant professor, Section of Medicine, when he defended the thesis "Every albuminuria is symptomatic of a disease of the kidneys?".
The Imperial Government, by decree of November 9, 1861, appointed Dr. Joaquim Antonio de Oliveira Botelho to govern the chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics, a position he held until 1869 (the year of his death).
During the War of Paraguay, with prof. Francisco Rodrigues da Silva (his successor in the chair of Materia Medica) and more than 40 students in fourth, fifth and sixth years, participated as a Navy doctor, assistance to soldiers wounded and sick, being awarded the Order of the Rose (2 ).
In the teaching of high school, the Lyceum was Professor and Director of the College Bahia International Airport.
