JOSÉ DANTAS DE SOUZA LEITE





 Born in 1859, in Santa Luzia in Rio Real.
In 1880, he received his degree in Medicine, awarded by the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia. They were classmates, and others, Antonio Pacheco Sergio Mendes and Julio Palma. The first became a full professor (Lens) Surgical Clinic and held for the first time in South America, a laparoscopy (2). The second, he became the ordinary professor of Histology (ibid.).
Ten years later, in 1890, graduated, again, in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Paris.
In the French capital, he worked under Prof. Charcot, famous neurologist, where he defended a doctoral thesis entitled "De l'acromegalie. Maladie de Pierre Marie, 1890, "based on a sample of 38 patients, of whom 8 observed in the service where she worked, and the remaining 30, published in the literature.
Dr. José Leite de Souza Dantas, considered by some AA. as natural of Bahia, is, in fact, born in Sergipe, since the municipality of Santa Luzia in Rio Real, belonged at the time of his birth, the Province of Sergipe Del Rey.
Brilliant professional, friend and collaborator of Professor. Pierre Marie (the most prominent disciple of Prof. Charcot), belonged to several international scientific institutions, including the Society and the Medico-Antropological Psychollogical Society, "was the first Brazilian to contribute on the outside, to the knowledge of pituitary disease and consequently For the development of endocrinology worldwide. "
