PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE OF BAHIA,
BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

*

Born in Itapicurii, on July 2, 1874, son of Pedro Faustino de Souza Batista Ponde Ponde and Olivia.
Reports that Antonio Loureiro de Souza Vieira Severino, said: "I met the parents of dr. Ponde. Two saints. The hinterland neighbors as they passed in front of the farmhouse, they found themselves as a temple. The children all went to. The sacred tree flourished and was perpetrated in fruits of perfection. He made science an apostolate alturuísmo "(2).
Conducted the initial studies in Salvador, the seminary of Santa Teresa and the Bahian High School, entering the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, where he pasted degree to December 14, 1897.
Even as a medical student, broke the course and headed for Straws in order to participate in the campaign against Antonio Conselheiro.
He began practicing the profession in São Paulo, Santa Cruz das Palmeiras. Some time later, he moved to the town of Magdalena, in Rio de Janeiro.
Then he returned to Bahia, where he was appointed physician in the Department of Prevention of Bubonic Plague, during which - in the company of Peixoto and Gonçalo Moniz-investigated in the city of Feira de Santana, the etiology of a disease murine reigning there.
He worked in the Isolation Hospital in Salvador and directed the Laboratory of the Municipal Laboratory Chemicals and chemical analysis.
Starting the teaching career, he competed for the title of Professor of Hygiene free, with a thesis entitled "Study of Chemical Capital of Potable Waters."
Besides competent doctor and hygienist, was a poet and an expert of the classics and philosophers.
His verses, Loureiro de Souza says, "have a flavor distinctly Parnassian without losing, however, a gentle lyricism that defined it, beside the great physician who was honest and careful investigator, a true poet, who has absorbed the medicine "(ibid.).
Pliny Garcês Sena said, addressing himself to Prof. Adriano Azevedo Pondé: "Did you, illustrious Scholar larger example in your own father, Dr. John Ponde, admirable figure of a physician, justly considered the best of their clinical time, so great was his concept and so was his unspoiled name in the community of Bahia "(1).
He died on September 11, 1934.
