Born in Salvador in 1847, and pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, in 1871.
Still a medical student, participated in the war of Paraguay.
In 1873 he was appointed by tender Opposition Section of Sciences Subsidiary.
In 1875, he ran for the post of chair Lens mineral chemistry.
In the same year, under the decree which made the opponents in Lens replacements, Dr. Alves de Melo was appointed substitute lens.
In 1877, he was named Lens of Physics.
He is the author of Historical Memory, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, for the year 1879.
It was retired in 1900 with 53 years of age.
Join Sá Oliveira Prof. Alfredo Brito, in his memory, Faculty of Medicine (1900), refers to Dr. Melo Alves, saying: "I was fortunate to be his disciple, which allows can say with full knowledge of the facts, its unsurpassed attendance, the extraordinary clarity of diction, that were done with his lectures, and solid instruction given by him in the chair he always played with true brilliance. "He adds, "understood the Interim Government should deprive her of this School competition, boring into him with a decree of forced retirement, whose blatant injustice could not fail to daunt his deeply moral, contributing to naturally thicken the darkness in which they plunged later his spirit.
