Born: September 14, 1820, County of Aberdeen, Scotland. Has the local medical school at the University, completing it in April 29, 1841.
Soon after she went to London in order to be admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons.
Achieved the coveted title, hospitals and deprived attended with the most notable professors from France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.
In 1842, after returning to hometown for a while and enjoy the cheerful familiarity father, took the first ship and sailed to Recife. Ali did not find the heart to greater delay, according to the capital of Paraiba and began a professional life.
When he realized that the clinic started to become stable and promising, had to resign and come to Bahia, in order to assist his elder brother and colleague, Dr. Alexander Paterson, who was unable to continue in front of his clinic.
She underwent examination and verification of sufficiency of title, the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia and obtained the license to the lawful exercise of the profession.
In the custom of his countrymen Paterson added the general population and so did that, says Silva Lima, "with the passage of time has come, and in extension work, and truly staggering proportions never seen in our city."
Very soon won the esteem and respect the people and the medical profession, not only thanks to his high skill as well as personal gifts of fine gentleman and man of letters.
His labors began early, often by high night. In two hours or less, interrupted the examination of poor patients, and after a light meal, riding on horseback and made his visits until two o'clock in the afternoon, after a frugal supper went out again and returned to home to the uncertain hour of the night, and sometimes so late and so tired you fall asleep clothed in a chair, during the three or four hours he had left for home.
At one time he was forced to hide in another house some distance from his, on nights when it was absolutely necessary to study or sleep in freedom.
Otto Wucherer Lima e Silva planted the foundations of Brazilian tropicology. His life was totally devoted to medicine, devoted himself body and soul to disadvantaged patients. It is known as "doctor of the poor."
He died on December 9, 1882.
Dr.Paterson's funeral the following day, was more important than Bahia previously attended. It became a public funeral. The people stormed the church and forcibly seized the coffin to carry by hand, to the cemetery. Despite the interference of the British consul and other officials present, the people did not give up its mind, claiming that the poor no one could prevent such a proof of gratitude.
