JOSÉ EDUARDO FREIRE DE CARVALHO

Born in the city of Salvador, June 6, 1828, and his parents Manuel José Freire de Carvalho and Ana Wilhelmina Antunes Guimarães Freire de Carvalho.
Conducting the primary studies and humanities in Salvador and joined the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, in which pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1851.
During the cholera epidemic that struck the state of Bahia, has provided invaluable service, bailing out large numbers of patients.
His dedication and his admirable care, earned the respect and admiration was the people of Bahia.
Also dedicated himself to public life, being elected to the Legislative Assembly of Bahia.
He was interim President of the Province in 1866.
In 1886, he was elected general in 1889 and was honored by the Emperor with the title of Director.
During the Republican period, continued in politics, being elected state senator (1893), a position he resumed in 1897, at the resignation of José Marcelino de Souza.
Died June 24, 1905, "respected and beloved by all who knew him" (Loureiro de Souza, quoted work).

Completed preparatory studies, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, which stuck by the degree of Doctor of Medicine on Dec. 1, 1876.
After the competition, was appointed in 1886, Lens Materia Medica and Therapeutics, when he defended a thesis on "Das Aristolochic and its use in therapy."
In 1915 he was appointed ordinary Professor of Clinical and Experimental Therapeutics and Art of drawing up, remaining so until 1925, when he was placed on standby.
He held various positions of importance, including the Representative of the Congregation of the School of Medicine at the Board of Education (1911/1912) and interim Director of the Faculty, on several occasions.
In 1906, conducted a study trip to Europe.
He was City Councillor (1893/1895), acting Mayor of Salvador (1895/1896) and Mayor (1900/1903), and Congressman (1912/1914).
Was memoirist, School of Medicine in 1909, when he published "Historical News about the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia" and "Historical Memory, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, in the year 1909 to 1910."
Sá Oliveira said: "Dr. Freire de Carvalho inconcussas proved to be a man so sincerely dedicated to their beliefs about their duties as teacher and politician, who also judged the highest value" (op. cit.)
And: "Nobody exceeded the honorable task of teaching, because they did so with efficiency, as well, judging from his disciples in the spirit of Justice" (ibid.).
