The only alternative was to stay in Bahia and study medicine.

Luiz Viana Filho says in his classic "Life of Ruy Barbosa", "the father was preparing him to be a scholar and an orator, and called him every moment to read and memorize long passages. It made him climb into a suitcase and taught him the position where it should stay the hands of the speaker, forcing him to recite in a loud voice, syllable by syllable, as if in front of the auditorium dreamed. "
