Lens was interim chair of Operations and births during the period 1818 to 1819; Lens owner of that chair (1824 to date of his death in 1825 or 1826).
Carvalho Filho says that "among the few students who attended the School of Surgery, Bahia, in this early period of medical education among us, most distinguished Alvares Jose do Amaral, who later was a lecturer, and José Manuel Bahia (1).
Sá Oliveira notes that the documents consulted, could not find the dates of birth and death of Professor. Jose Alvarez. It is possible that he died in 1826, for "under the Charter of the Imperial on May 24 that year, Dr. Antônio Torquato Pires was appointed Chair of the Lens" Surgical Institutions, Operations and Deliveries ", which had required" (2).
