JORGE LEOCÁDIO DE OLIVEIRA
*
Graduated in 1936 from the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, which was one of the most competent professors and esteemed by all who knew him, colleagues, students, friends and admirers.
He wrote several scientific and cultural, belonged to numerous medical institutions of Bahia, including the Academy of Medicine, which provided important services.
Of published studies, we highlight those related to diabetic vasculopathy and nutrition.
Deep knowledge of the medical workup, reigned for several years in the old medical faculty of the Shrine of Jesus, benefiting from their experience, simplicity and ease of communication, several generations of physicians who now provide important services to society in Bahia.
In paticular the diabetic vasculopathy, insisted on the measurement of blood pressure in the lower limbs by Doppler. His comparison, he said, with the blood of the upper limbs, as well as between both legs, may shed light of great practical value, showing lower voltage side of the obstructive process.
It explained: "The measure of tension and supramaleolar arm (usually one equal to or greater than this) to determine the pressure index equal to or greater than unity (5.8) in healthy individuals" (2).
"Offering up - he said - to 4 sleeves, two in the thigh and two in the leg and was listening with the Doppler, or retromalleolar pedal, a difference of up to 20 mm Hg blood pressure is considered normal. Above 30mm is slightly pathological "(ibid.).
Recommended, insistently, to reduce consumption of fats and sugar and increased physical activity. When reducing the fat content, recommended the reduction of 42% of calories per meal, for up to 35%. The reduction of sugar and sugary foods, should reach at least 15% of current consumption. Saturated fats should be replaced by polyunsaturated fats. The consumption of vegetables, fruits, potatoes, dairy products low in fat, fish, lean meat, poultry, bread and other grain products should be increased proportionately, according to the standards of the National Institute of Public Health (1)
It was, in many aspects, one of the most illustrious figures of Medicine of Bahia.
