ALFREDO AUGUSTO DA MATA
Born in Salvador, Bahia, on March 18, 1870. His parents were Major Joaquim Francisco da Mata and Carolina Forest Leopoldina.
Having completed primary and secondary courses in his hometown, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, where he obtained his doctorate in December 1893.
They were classmates: Francisca Barreto Praguer, Gonçalo Muniz Sodre of Aragon, Joao Goncalves Martins, all professors of the Faculty (3).
His first job was a doctor of Lloyd Brasileiro. He traveled throughout the north coast of Brazil, resigned to take up residence in the city of Manaus.
In Manaus, founded the newspaper "Amazonas Doctor" and has produced numerous scientific papers related to tropical diseases and dermatological diseases, many of them awarded by medical institutions in Brazil and abroad.
Natural born researcher, discovered in 1918, and studied, the disease of rubber, caused by a microcoleóptero that - in her honor - was given the name Platypus matai. The following year, ie in 1919, discovered and classified a new triatomine bug, Rhodnius genus belonging to and diagnosed the first case of schistosomiasis in the Amazon.
He wrote two hundred thirty-four scientific production, for which he received a significant honor for doctors Amazonian jubilee on occasion of his profession. Seven days of tributes were congratulatory, departures of all classes representing Manaus, the Amazon and Brazil. It is of his own diagnosis of the first cases of Carrion's disease, Bartonella hitherto limited to Peru and a few neighboring countries.
Carlos Lacaz, recapitulating the life and work of Alfredo Mata, said he "was undoubtedly a devoted researcher and publicist in matters of tropical medicine and is also an administrator impeccable, with the technical skills and passionate scholar. It was, above all, a selfless, tireless in his activity to ensure the wholesomeness of Manaus "(2).
As a college professor, has reached immeasurable importance. He was professor of hygiene and of course Enfermatologia Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine of Manaus.
Participated in almost all national and international conferences in its area of action, made in his time, presenting works that deserved them (at least some of them ...) worldwide impact (1).
He was part of a significant number of scientific institutions from Brazil, France, Belgium and Italy, which has received several honors.
He died in Rio de Janeiro in March 1954, at 84 years of age.
