Born in Salvador, in 1844.
Pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1868, the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia.
"His life has unfolded in the service of the clinic, and the chair of political representation.
The paths that ran lent high ethical sense, investigating the actions of the metro preceitual an upright conscience, inflexible to the contingencies of life, and thus allowing to remain equal to the court of posterity. Trained in England, became the first optometrist in the state to monopolize large practice and no less fame, who took him to occupy, as a founder, the chair of ophthalmology, School of Medicine, enabled in competition with the thesis entitled "Eye disorders Symphaticas 'from which emanate sentences marked by the spirit of observation - the prerogative of an era in which, by itself, enough to search for and achievement of scientific truth "(1).
Took the chair in 1886, which had exercised free.
Extremely charitable, refused any payment for services rendered when they suspected that the client was poor, or economically needy. His humanitarian spirit has created unusual situations. Count those deprived of their intimacy that often, not only refused payment as withdrawing their savings, some money, and offered the difficulty they faced. When someone condemning his conduct, accusing him of short-sighted, he replied - "I got credit, and he did not have it."
He gave his salary to poor clients, and would walk to college, to receive the salary the following month.
Staunch abolitionist, freed the slaves he had inherited.
As a politician, he fought for the cause Redemptorist, so it was elected and re-elected.
Ribeiro Taques revealed in his doctoral thesis in 1886 that Professor Santos Pereira was the first who applied in Brazil, cocaine as a local anesthetic.
He died in 1912, leaving for posterity one of the finest examples of modesty, humility and competence.
