ANTÔNIO MARIANO BONFIM

A native of Bahia, where he was born in the year 1827 (*).
Pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1850, the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia.
Classmates were: Antonio de Jesus Souza, Antônio Mariano Bonfim, Henrique Alvares dos Santos and Joaquim Antonio de Oliveira Botelho. Antonio de Jesus Souza, during the cholera epidemic that struck the state of Bahia, in 1855, was arrested for refusing to assist the population affected by the terrible evil. During the same epidemic, Henrique Alvares dos Santos headed the Office of Health and Welfare, when general rules established for the patients. The two other colleagues, became also the school's faculty (2).
Opponent was by tender of the Section of Sciences Subsidiary (1857). Substitute by tender of that section and, in 1862, professor of Botany and Zoology. It remained so until 1875, year, likely, his death (*)
It was the doctor Charity Hospital, Santa Casa de Misericordia da Bahia and Commander of the Order of Christ.
Gonçalo Moniz, Antonio portraying Bonfim Mariano says: "teacher illustrated and zealous in the discharge of their duties, always strove for the effectiveness of teaching and development of his chair and was one of the few who have written books for student learning" ( in Sá Oliveira, work cited).
Sá de Oliveira added: "During the War of Paraguay, were relevant medical services provided by Dr. Mariano Bonfim".

(*) = There is controversy about the dates of birth and death of Professor. Anthony Mariano of Bonfim. Sacramento For Blake, born in 1827 and headed died in 1874 or 1875. To Gonçalo Moniz, the dates are 1927 and 1874. To Sá de Oliveira, 1827 and 1875.
