Born: January 8, 1894, in Salvador, and his parents John and Amelia Santos Peter Santos Rego.
Completed preparatory studies, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, in which pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1917.
At the graduation ceremony, Edgard Santos was the valedictorian of doctoral candidates.
Upon completion of medical school, went to Sao Paulo, where he specialized in surgery.
Upon returning to Salvador in 1922, assumed direction of the Emergency Room. and joined the teaching profession. Conducted, temporarily, on two occasions, the Chair of Surgical Pathology (1925 and 1926).
In 1927, was approved in a contest to fill the chair of Surgical Pathology. In 1933 he was transferred to the Surgical Clinic.
After the competition, went to Europe on a study trip, when he attended the best surgical wards of Paris, Lyons and Berlin.
Return to Bahia, promoted remarkable renewal of the Emergency Services and built the Getulio Vargas Hospital, in the neighborhood of Canela.
In the Spanish Hospital, conducted a similar study, construction and renovation.
Created the University of Bahia, in 1946, was elected Rector.
Since then, he started a management unparalleled in the history of the university, truly mammoth work, why it was extended for several successive terms.
Doctor Honoris Causa of the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon, has received numerous honors from several scientific institutions and cultures of Brazil and abroad.
In 1954 he was appointed Minister of Education, the Government of President Vargas.
In 1961, the occasion to organize the list for nomination of candidates for Rector, "had assumed the Presidency of the Republic Mr. Quadros. Moody, unstable in his positions and attitudes, was a model of dishonesty in public office. Again the list was formed with Edgard elected on the first ballot, with the almost unanimous vote. Forwards an indication of the University Council for president, did not expect the charge of the appointment. He chose the second name on the list.
At 67, Edgar became the biggest disappointment of his public life. The mandate was denied ended when he turned seventy. It would be the last because it would soon have to retire by age of the implement. And he had prepared himself to close with a gold key to their management. "(1).
The dean unique "retreated to his own house, where he spent virtually every hour of the day, reading, receiving friends, talking on the phone and busy with the extensive correspondence" (ibid.).
He was appointed to the Federal Council of Education, which was elected unanimously President.
Edgard Santos died on June 3, 1962.
