Born in Salvador, in 1826. Pasted the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1847, the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1855, he ran for the post of Opposition Section of Medical Sciences. In 1859, the Surrogate of the said Section. In 1865, the chair of Physiology. In 1861, the Opposition, by tender of the Section of Medical Sciences.
In 1871, won in a brilliant contest, the chair of Pathology Affairs.
In 1849, she won the competition for the professorship of Greek at the Lyceum of Bahia.
Member of the Commission of Public Hygiene (1856) and the Board of Education of the Province.
Director of St John of God Hospice, Board member of the Emperor and the Imperial Academy of Medicine.
Deputy Provincial (in various legislatures).
Worked in the press, one of the founders of "Diary of Bahia."
Author of Historical Memory, Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, concerning the year 1870, and other works, which highlight the theses defended in the competitions that are submitted.
His most important theses were, in chronological order:
1. "The antagonism between the swamp fevers and pulmonary phthisis" (Inaugural dissertation, 1847).
2. "The assistance provided by drums and escutação be sufficient for the diagnosis of lesions of the heart? "(1857).
3. "What are the main causes that contribute to the development of the intertropical hipoemia?" (1871).

He died in 1888.
Sá Oliveira, about Demetrius Tourinho said: "... it was a great master of illustration, political high-concept, a journalist fighting for the cause of democracy, orator, administrator and laborious clinical merit" (op. cit.)
